The above characteristics usually mean

  • the child is usually very powerful within the family with a
strong will that may be overpowering
  • but usually has very low self-esteem and is unhappy
    much of the time
These children are just badly behaved yet this list of characteristics look as serious any of the lists of symptoms of major disorders like ADHD or Aspergers Syndrome or Attachment Disorder.

Characteristics you would not expect

Some of these characteristics are surprising in a child that is just badly behaved. You would not expect your badly behaved child to

  • seem not to be able to understand reasons or logical explanations
  • find it difficult or impossible to lose even over small
        unimportant things
  • tend to blame others for even small disappointments
  • occasionally still be sleeping in their parent's bed
  • tend not to have or not keep friends
  • usually have very low self-esteem and be unhappy
        much of the time

So where do these other characteristics come from?

It is vital we discover where these other characteristics come from.   They do not characterise a child with a positive self-concept or a personality that is emotionally  "strong".   The child they describe is lonely and insecure.

This is the first clue in our attempt to identify the flaw in our interactions with our children.  What ever this flaw is it does not just create children who do not want to lose or do not want to accept small disappointsment but children who are emotionally not able to.
